In-Home Aides: Role in Mediction Management Speaker: Jan Helsper, RN Description: Elderly patients are frequent medication users and often are on many medications. Advanced age and frailty may increase their vulnerability to adverse medication effects that can lead to falls, injuries and other serious problems. Some studies have suggested that 28% of elderly patient admissions to the hospital are due to medication noncompliance or adverse drug events. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) estimates that medication errors cause approximately one death per day. The aide will be able to describe common side effects of medications to watch for and report; recognize when patients may not be compliant with medications; state safety measures that can be implemented by patients and family members to increase medication safety; and, identify the aideÕs role in helping patients to manage their medications safely
